mid sem crit 23/08/10

We had our mid sem crit on the 23rd of August. It was a very helpful crit and it helped us answer a lot of our own problems we had.

So after the crit, we continued to experiment with the different ways to inflat a plastic bag. We tested with helium and also blowing air into the bags with hair dryer. Apart from that, we also experimented with the different connections such as connecting a long row of bags with a sealer then with a sewing machine. We tested with the tubular forms and also our original floral patterns.

draw string connections

Since we all agreed on one connection our next task was to make LOTS of it.
So we came up with a systematic way of connecting the bags. They were connected in groups of four with draw string through them.

testing bag connections

We are back to testing the different connections of our bags - our previous way of connecting proved to be too simple and not interesting enough. We finally manged to buy our bag sealer and managed to do a variety of different tests.

One of the test that all three of us including our tutors were interested in was the draw string connection.

site visit

The whole of design 4 plus tutors all met at the site where we are to assemble our 8m structure.
Sheds 1+2 were not quite what we expected and would have caused most of us to re think our design.

We are not allowed to use the buildings electricity (anything that requires electricity would need generators of some sort)

Jury 10-08-10

Tuesday 10th August was a 'competition' for all the Design 4 groups. We had to show our most recent ideas to 3 "Judges" and sell our idea in just 3 minutes.
After a few days of no sleep, we finally managed to finish our presentations just in time to present our work.

We had to do 3x A1's consisting plans, elevations, sections... of our potential 10m structure, 1x 1:20 model and a portion of our 1:1.
We used a variety of bag sizes for our 1:1 showing the gradual change in bag sizes as it moves up the structure.

recasting plastic bags

The ball-shaped bags didn't go very well, so we stuck with the translucent plastic bags. This time, grouping them into 3's and connecting them into a bubble-like facade.

Back to the Bags

After we tested with the balloons, we decided that the plastic bags were still more interesting and we could experiment more with them. Therefore, we decided to just go with the plastic bag idea but will be experimenting with different opacities and sizes.

We started to seal the air inside the bags using our hair straighteners.

Inflating Balloons

Since we were interested in the whole inflation idea, we decided to test them on balloons as well.

Recasting Plastic Bags

We decided to try plastic bags to test if the inflation would work.
